EVAN

“’What do I owe to the pleasure of your visit Jazmyne?” I say, immediately regretting opening the door for her. My day was going well and I was looking forward to listening to this new jazz CD I purchased today.

Do I really want to know the answer to that question? I truly do not. The last time Jaz and I were together, she stormed out of the same door she just walked in. Looking at her standing in front of me, I am reminded of the last time she was here.

“You will be sorry E, that I can guarantee you. You will never find anyone to love you like I do,” she had said as she pulled the front door closed behind her. She had used so much force that a frame that hung on the wall near the door went crashing to the floor with a loud bang. How ironic that the same frame that was then on the floor with all the glass shattered, held the quotation ‘Don’t Leave Without Kissing Me Good-bye.’

“Evan, I told you I will always be around and will pop up at any time.”

Jazmyne, the 5’2 self-absorbed ball of fire, was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and golden slippers encrusted in diamonds on her tiny feet. Jazmyne always had to be in control, always wanting to be in control of her life and mine.

“Jazmyne, I mean what are you doing here, now? I thought you were still jet setting all over the world.” I could not resist throwing that in. I hate the mood this woman puts me in.

“I was missing Harlem and of course you and all the fun we used to have,” she said with all the added drama: seductively fluttering her eyes and speaking with a low purr. I always hated when she did that. I couldn’t believe she had just said that with a straight face. So, I just shook my head and chuckled to myself.

“Are you still driving the bus?” she asks with no real interest at all. The question is basically rhetorical. She rolls her eyes and makes a sucking sound with her teeth and lips, letting her condescendence be known. Jazmyne always thought that anyone having to work for a living was so beneath her.

“You know, Evan if you would’ve stayed with me, you would be traveling the world while someone else does all the manual labor,” she says as she flops herself down on the sofa in my living room. “You are not going to offer me anything to drink?” she asks as she removes her clearly high-priced jacket.

I am not surprised at her brashness; she makes herself comfortable without noticing I have yet to offer her something to drink. “If you have something preferably cold and bubbly, that would be awesome,” she continues. As I find something in my kitchen for Jazmyne to drink, I can’t help but to shake my head at how she just shows up at my door. Being with her always left me feeling like I was a charity case.
